Parabens are a type of preservative. The most common found in beauty products are butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.

When parabens exist in makeup, the chemical preservative is able to penetrate the skin and remain within the tissue. Parabens are believed to disrupt hormone function by mimicking estrogen and have been linked to breast cancer.
